10 January 2011

Older? Yes. Wiser? Not really.

Well here we are again, another year older, another year none-the-wiser about what's happening with Boggo Road. We are still waiting for an unofficial government announcement about the place, as we were told several weeks back that it could be a couple of years before the place reopens. I'm not going to say anything yet, but a recent letter from a BRGHS member to Public Works minister Rob Schwarten may result in a new direction - we shall see.

As for 2011, here is my little Boggo Road wish list:
  • That the state government wake up to the obvious benefits of investing in the old gaol. Just take a look at what other states have done with their historic prisons.
  • That the Boggo Road Gaol Historical Society continues to thrive. More members, more influence, more books, more tours.
  • That somebody gives us free office space :)
  • That one day I might actually get some money for all this work :)
  • That our Moonlight Tours continue to be a success.
  • That our other new tours planned for this year are a success.
  • That 2011 is an enjoyable and creative year for us, in the way that not-for-profit community work should be.
The last two years have been massive for the BRGHS. If 2011 can be as good as them, I'll be more than happy. It has been five long years since we left the gaol museum, and frankly some people did not think we could survive 'homeless' for this long. Well, we have, and now have enough members to ensure we can stick around for a long time yet.

There will be much to come from the BRGHS in the next couple of months alone - watch this space!
