The Gaol and Cyclone Yasi

Not long after writing about the indirect-but-serious effects of the Brisbane floods on Boggo Road, another natural disaster in the form of Cyclone Yasi has left its mark on Queensland. Of course this was far enough away from Brisbane to have no effect here, but the estimated damage bill of $500m will surely see Boggo Road dropping further down any Public Works priority list.

The $500k it would cost to open the old gaol up again for basic but limited access is no longer in the kitty, if it ever was. We in the BRGHS have been trying to get info out of Public Works about the estimated reopening schedule, as we were expecting news by this month, but are still waiting. It has been all-but-confirmed, however, that Boggo Road will not reopen this year.

Despite this, we still see small business advertising claiming that the place will open this year. This claim is simply not true, and is in fact starting to border on being an outright lie. The BRGHS has made a point of being the go-to organisation for honest information on this matter, and in our advertising for proposed tours, we clearly state what we believe to be the best available information regarding the reopening of Boggo Road.

The message here is: the gaol will not be open this year, and please ignore any misleading advertising that says otherwise.
