This is an update on my recent article 'The ghost that haunted South Brisbane Cemetery... from a thousand miles away', and hopefully the last on the subject for a while.
Cameron 'Jack' Sim of Brisbane Ghost Tours is coming under increasing scrutiny from others in the paranormal field. One quality new blog called 'Haunts of Brisbane' describes him as 'an unqualified salesman plugging gimmicky tours based on fictionalised "heritage"', while others publicly accuse him of having 'the worst reputation I have ever heard of'. This comes in the wake of my own less-than-complementary articles about 'most haunted polls' and the publication of misleading photos.

Although I thought I was more restrained in my criticism than others, it was no surprise when I received an email this morning containing legal threats from Mr Sim. As I have said before, ‘from now on communication on these matters will be dealt with in the public sphere’, so here we are. Although Mr Sim did not have the fortitude to address me himself, I will direct my comments to him anyway. This is the letter, with corrective comments from myself:
'Dear Chris Dawson,
We are aware of what has been happening on Facebook. There have been 3 incidents of people commenting on our Facebook page just to attack our business. We know these people are connected to you and The Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery. We even suspect that some of them may have been invented by you for this sole purpose. We are asking you now to cease and desist or we will have to take action against you. Their comments are defamatory and rude. Our regular customers who follow our Facebook page have written in, upset about what has been happening. This cannot go on.
The false assumption that the Facebook critics are actually me, or ‘connected’ to me, is a rather paranoid premise on which to base a legal threat. Am I going to be sued for the comments of other people on Facebook? If so, God help us all.
'I am also aware of what you have recently posted on 'The Boggo Blog'. Firstly, I am the host on the South Brisbane Cemetery tour. I received the photo and I posted it on Facebook. I mislabelled the photo, I am aware of that and it was a simple mistake. It was very good of our customer to send us these photos and we are very happy they did so. I have apologised profusely for mislabelling it. However, Chris, it was a simple mistake. You have then taken my personal error and broadcasted it, turning it into this ridiculous claim that we have been stealing photos. I am very happy to take responsibility of what happened but not to take responsibility for your outrageous claims.
I wrote that this incident was either a mistake or outright deceit. Ghost Tours have claimed that it was a mistake of ‘mislabelling’, despite the selective editing of the text that explained this was not a picture of the cemetery. In fact, even after the discrepancy was pointed out, Ghost Tours bunkered down and insisted that it WAS from a night tour at the cemetery. The claim that it was actually the South Brisbane Cemetery tour guide that made that ‘mistake’ is very revealing.
For the record, I did not ever say that anybody was ‘stealing photos’.
For the record, I did not ever say that anybody was ‘stealing photos’.
'These ongoing attacks affect, not only Jack, but they affect our staff and customers. They affect me personally and our poor customer that graciously gave us these unexplainable photos.
Actually, the ‘poor customer’ actually thanked the guy from Haunted Australia (who called Jack Sim an 'immature child' with 'the worst reputation i have ever heard of') for his comments on the Ghost Tour page. Go figure.
I must remind you, Chris, that we will have to be working together in the future (says who?) and we think you should come to terms with that now and stop this parade of stooges coming across our Facebook page and slinging mud. We are not dumb. Not only are they upsetting our ever faithful customers but they are muddying your name as everyone knows they are connected to you.
Deconstructing critics is not a very mature way handling criticism. This imaginary ‘parade of stooges’ are in reality a range of individuals who I have no control over and in most cases don't even know. While it is quite flattering for someone to think I have this level of control over an army of willing henchmen, it is seriously unhealthy to assume that random people who criticise you are somehow all working together in some kind of conspiracy.
Is the Courier-Mail reporter who recently gave the South Brisbane Cemetery Ghost Tour a terrible review in on the conspiracy too?
'We wish that you would stop these school yard squabbles and cyber bullying and conduct yourself like the professional business man that you claim to be.*
Sticks and stones etc etc...
Holding people to account for their assertions in a public setting is not ‘cyber bullying’, it is a normal part of discourse and negotiation in the field of history and heritage. If someone makes an incorrect claim, it is usual for that claim to be countered by the presentation of facts. That is all I have ever done in my blogs.

As for ‘professionalism’, when my behaviour has resulted in multiple visits and warnings from the police, appearances in court, and being banned from dealings with several community groups (I can name five, there may be more), then I will have reached Mr Sim’s level of professionalism and he can lecture me all about it then.
Behind his manufactured façade, it would seem that 'Jack' Sim’s modus operandi for over ten years has been to bully, threaten and abuse. Now that this behaviour is finally being exposed in the public domain he suddenly wants the 'schoolyard squabbles' to stop and everyone to forget what happened. And how does he go about this? With apologies and a mea culpa? No, just the usual threats and insults.
'I am very happy to meet with you and discuss any problems you have. Just let me know.

You know what I’d be happy with? For 'Jack' Sim to either show us this bloody National Geographic article in which Brisbane was ‘voted the second most haunted city in the world’, or just come out and admit that it does not exist. We're all waiting!
* Having never owned a business, I certainly don't recall ever describing myself as a businessman.
** As I believe the person whose name was attached this email either never wrote the email, or did so under instruction, I have removed her name from this article. Especially as she left Ghost Tours shortly after this was sent.

I am apparently one of those stooges even though I have never met any of you or have I ever stepped foot inside the South Brisbane Cemetery. This accusation was made by Mr Sim in a vile message he sent me via facebook after I had made some comments on their page. I responded to a cheap shot comment they made in their newsletter about the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery. I still agree fully with my comment that they were childish and unprofessional in making that statement. That is not defamation - that is a fact. It was totally un-necessary for them to even mention the friends group. After receiving the message I sent Mr Sim a reply - to date he has not even had the courtesy to respond. I am also blocked from the ghost tours facebook page which really, doesn't bother me.
ReplyDeleteWhat is defamation Mr Sim is the contents of the vile message you sent me with the accusations you made towards me and people of this group.
And to the ever so faithful customers - how they cannot see the real truth here is beyond me.
The fact that anyone who has anything negative to say, or just some simple criticism about ghost tours is automatically tagged a stooge for you guys - absolutely laughable! Even better is the numerous accusations they throw out there without any sort of proof.
The truth hurts Mr Sim - grow up!!!!
JJ
Too true JJ. I once told Mr Sim of a woman (who works with my wife) who thought the Ghost Tour she was on was so bad she and half the group walked away in disgust half way through it - and thats after paying a whopping $35 each for the tour. He refused to accept this was true because I wouldn't tell him her name (for her own protection). His words: "It never happened".
ReplyDeleteTo live in denial of any criticism, to vilify all critics as conspirators, is not healthy or mature.
Chris, I have some info you might be interested in mate, how can I contact you?
ReplyDeleteJoshua
Joshua, the email for the BRGHS (info@boggoroadgaol.com.au) is the best way.
ReplyDeletePiss poor effort on behalf of ghost tours - a legal threat followed by I am happy to meet with you and discuss it: oh FFS!
ReplyDeleteI am a ghost tours customer and I wasn't upset by the postings - in fact, it was rather entertaining. I am curious on how ghost tours believe that the 2 posters in the photo fiasco that actually said anything negative are stooges for you all. I want to point out that they were:
1. Owner of the other facebook page who posted the photo
2. Owner of the photo - yes, the person who sent the photo to ghost tours in the first place.
Great detective skills there ghost tours!!
I don't believe the simple mistake in labelling this photo for one minute mostly because they did not post the original photo that was sent to them. The full, uncropped picture is a far more spookier looking one anyway.
I also saw the comments that the person above posted and they were no way an attack on his business. The people were merely making a statement in response to what was written by ghost tours. I agree with them because it was totally unnecessary and it was an obvious and blatant attack on a volunteer group to stir up more conflict. The ensuing message from Jack to the persons involved in those posts is just incredible and extremely unprofessional. Who was doing the mud slinging Jack???? YOU! If I was in the postion of these people from FOSBC and BRGHS I'd have your arse in court quick smart. Why don't you just lay off the volunteer groups and stop spreading crap about them.
For the record - I do not know anyone from BRGHS, FOSBC or the other commentors on facebook. I am a long time customer of ghost tours but not anymore.
ex ghost tours customer
To 'Kel' who sent thru the comment last night: I agree with what you said, but am trying to avoid name-calling in comments so had to hold it back in moderation. Sorry! I guess the best idea is to criticise the behaviour.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the accumulated body of legal threats go, I do think that if any more are forthcoming then I should find online space and copy-and paste or scan them all there. There are some real doozies, including those passed on to me by other people.
Wow. Another problem with Jack Sims, what a surprise. I am part of a Brisbane Paranormal crew and I have nothing but problems when it comes to that man! He gives the paranormal world a bad name!
ReplyDeleteHey, why not drop us a line at info@boggoroadgaol.com.au and tell us all about it! ;)
ReplyDeleteHow the hell did he receive heritage awards when this is how he treats historical groups????? Especially when he states he would encourage the public not to support them. I guess being besties with Tully helps.
ReplyDeleteI am a long term follower of ghost tours and I am just astounded about this stuff.
I noticed that his snide remark about the friends group from South Brisbane Cemetery singled them out from the group of 3 involved. Why??? maybe a major conflict of interest being that is the only one he does tours in.
Very professional way to respond - through an employee!!
Rob (Bundamba)
This is priceless! They certainly assume a lot - anyone making a negative comment are automatically stooges (real or made up) for your group. Paranoia at its best!!
ReplyDeleteIt has been picked up by others - the conflict of interest with the only friends group doing their own tours. Which would be why the other 2 groups were conveniently not mentioned in their newsletter slur.
Rob (Bunbamba) has asked a brillant question - how does he gets these heritage awards when his behaviour towards other historical groups is appalling and worse is the contents of the blog about the ghost of Archerfield. I also discovered that the only people who really got stuck into organising cleaning the cemetery after the floods was the friends group - where was Jack???
The legal threat is nonsense.
You guys deserve a dam medal for all this crock of sh.. you have had to put up with.

Rob,
ReplyDeleteI know Cllr Tully has something of a working relationship with 'Jack' Sim, but I'm not sure what role he would have played in all this, or that it influenced the decision at all. I don't think Cllr Tully would have been involved in awards?
As for the award itself, making a 'small contribution' to someone else's project seems to be the extent of it.
I don't know either Chris but it all does look sus since Tully is in all the things historical here in Ippy. Just recently Tully filled in for an absent Jack on the radio show. Besides that, he doesn't deserve it when he treats others with such contempt. Nice to see a grave restored - but at what cost? I read in the paper that this was an Ipswich City Council project - when did that change?
ReplyDeleteWhat's worse is that he didn't have the gonads to confront this issue as the owner of the company.
Rob (Bundamba)
Well, well, well it just never stops. Bit rich with a legal threat coming from an employee.
ReplyDeleteJJ, I am the other assumed stooge, I am still dumbfounded on how pathetic that accusation is. And who are all these ever so faithful customers that also know anyone who disagrees with ghost tours is connected with the friends group? It really is pathetic!
It is interesting to see others with similar problems and surprise surprise - one predates the friends group.
I really do feel for you guys. You spend so much time on a passion, do it all for free and you get treatment like this from a so-called professional business man.
Matt
To tell the truth Matt, I don't believe that this was written by an 'employee'. Mr Sim has a record of sending abusive emails in other people's names (the giveaway was misspelling the surname), so now we have to assume that any email from a staff member is probably from him. Who can tell? I can't be sure that the person this email is supposed to be from even knows it exists.
ReplyDeleteElisabeth will have done the physical writing and sending of this email, but Jack will have dictated to her.
ReplyDeleteTrust me, I know this.
Not a good thing to do at all IMO. I am a business owner and I would never address a situation like this through an employee. This email also was written in quite a similar manner to the message I received from Jack. He has quite a thing for the word stooge - this is very insulting as it also means "idiot".
ReplyDeleteI can clearly see why this man and his company has been banned from dealings with community groups - I would have done the same. Bloody disgraceful behaviour!
Matt
You can probably also see why he has lost not only one, but two employees in the last month.
ReplyDeleteI know about Brad, who is the other one?
ReplyDeleteMake that 3 then.
ReplyDeleteI think Jack needs to have a good read of "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie.
ReplyDeleteThis is obviously a pretty emotive issue for a number of people, but remember folks, lets keep it clean - this is not YouTube. There have been a few comments not make it thru moderation, which I don't like to do (especially if I agree with them).
ReplyDeleteInteresting.. Ghost Tours has now disabled the commenting feature on their Facebook page altogether! I wonder if someone's link to Haunts of Brisbane's blog about the inaccuracy of the "13th Avenue" story (and the subsequent comments) had anything to do with that move!
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know what's happening Luke, but it a sad state of affairs if it's an easier option than answering some very basic and fair questions that aren't going to go away anyway. I think clients on Ghost Tours have a right to know whether or not claims made have been substantiated.
ReplyDeleteI have also heard on the grapevine that Jack Sim is being taken to court again next week, another peace and good behaviour case, this time involving the folks from Haunted Australia.
I have had my recent comments deleted off the ghost tours facebook page - again. I didn't think what I said was all that bad, just the truth. Can't post on there anymore. It is such a cowardly act to delete comments, block people etc when legitimate questions have been raised. I am still waiting for a copy of the National Geographic poll re Brisbane being the world's 2nd most haunted city!!!
ReplyDeleteAfter receiving a personal message from Jack Sim himself attacking members of your groups I am not surprised to hear he is going to court. I hope he gets a good KARMA kick in the arse.
Matt
To the other Matt who submitted a comment - sorry, had to 'snip' it. I know what you mean, believe me, but I don't want to cross any lines here.
